《夜航船》(The Night Boat)
Illustrations are more than narrative, they are emotional expression linking literature, plays and films.
These two digital drawings are derived from an ancient Chinese folklore collection called “The Night Boat” (夜航船), written by Zhangdai in Ming Dynasty.
The Night Boat, included the definitions of traditional sayings, allegories, folklores, etc. It’s feature bestowed itself as the Wikipedia of Chinese culture. The first pic depicted the preface of the book, while the second records a small story that was only written within 3 sentences.
The first: a young man on the boat is boasting his knowledge reserve over the world, while the monk sitting by his side founds that his statements did not hold the water. But he didn’t point out the young man’s faults.
The second: Wang Xizhi (a famous Chinese calligrapher) wrote down his characters on an old lay’s fan, so that she could sell them. But then she wants Wang to write on all of her fans in the basket. The calligrapher was so scared and tried to hide away from her in an ally . This ally then called ‘hide away from the old lady (躲婆弄) in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province.
The third: Yang ZaiSi(杨再思), formally Duke Gong of Zheng, was an official of the Chinese dynasty Tang Dynasty and Wu Zetian's Zhou Dynasty, serving several times as chancellor during the reigns of Wu Zetian and her son Emperor Zhongzong. Yang was criticized by traditional historians for his flattery.  
On one banquet, a man teased Yang: 'Yang is like a Korea.' He was pleased, and cut paper on the towel, wearing a purple rob, jumping up the Korean dance, shaking his head and waving his hand, making a concert, full of laughter.  -Citation from Book of (Old and New) Tang Dynasty
